Poor Mobile Experience Lowers Google Search Rankings

Google said it, so it must be true. Mobile user experience, beyond the surface level of your site, does matter.

As soon as word was released that Google is introducing a change in search engine rankings for smartphone search results, the mobile decks of agencies everywhere added yet another slide to help sell in mobile services.

Speaking of decks, here is one from our own Stuzo archives that really helps concisely showcase the importance of mobile readiness being required for customer engagement with today’s mobile & connected customer.

The Mobile Takeover

To date the majority of our clients have taken mobile seriously when considering tactics, strategies and investment in campaign-based initiatives, native apps, and experimental budgets. However, it’s surprising to find that there are still many companies who do not make the proper investment to really focus on their mobile web user experience across all brand touch points they own and deep into their sites. Google may accelerate this change, as mobile SEO is increasingly becoming important. And as all search professionals and many businesses know, SEO goes well beyond your home page or a mobile landing page and is important deep into your site and for the long tail.

For good supplemental reading to prepare for mobile readiness, see our Stuzo infographic on top mobile do’s and don’ts and Google’s mobile developer tips on how to prep for their SERP changes for smartphone users.

At Stuzo, we are somewhat fanatical when it comes to pushing our clients for the preferred customer mobile experience, and by measuring, optimizing, and monitoring ranking changes such as these, it will, only push their site higher in the rankings when it comes to our deployments. Any customer who has sat with us through mapping out a project and engaged us for user experience sessions can sure attest to that. Whether it’s a one-off static solution or a rich, deeply engaging social experience, we present opportunities to give the proper user experience to the right audience. And with that, now, a better chance at ranking higher in the Google search results.

Google is based off of algorithms. Traditionally, ranking changes are heavy algorithms that simply try to find calculated ways to qualify if a site is providing the user what they are looking for. At the end of the day, much of this comes down to creating the proper user-experience.

As Google says as their very first belief in their corporate philosophy, – “Focus on the user and all else will follow.” We recommend all business take this into consideration for their increasingly growing mobile customer and if you do, the search engine rankings, engagement and ROI will follow.
